Two Dutch F-35 fighter jets intercepted a formation of three Russian military aircraft over Poland and escorted it out of Polish airspace, the Dutch Defense Ministry announced late Monday.

The initially “unidentified” aircraft approached NATO’s Polish area of responsibility “from Kaliningrad,” the statement said.

The ministry refers to the Russian enclave in the Baltic Sea between Poland and Lithuania, EU and NATO member states.

“After identification”, it was found that it was a Russian Ilyushin IL-20M Coot-A (intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft), which was “accompanied” by two Sukhoi Su-27 fighters. “Two Dutch F-35s escorted the formation at some distance before handing off the escort to NATO partners.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

The Dutch Ministry of Defense has announced that eight Dutch F-35s have been deployed in Poland for the period of February-March.
