South Africa, where the Omicron variant was spotted last month, announced today that it was easing restrictions on tackling the pandemic and lifting the night-time curfew after the wave peaked.
Demands for the lifting of the curfew from midnight to 4 am have multiplied in recent days, in view of the New Year. Restaurant and bar owners have been collecting signatures online for this purpose.
“The curfew is lifted. “There is therefore no restriction on traffic hours,” the presidency said. The sale of alcohol is allowed after 23.00 for the stores that have a relevant license.
“All indicators indicate that the country has overcome the peak of the fourth wave” of the pandemic, always according to the announcement of the presidency. New infections fell 29.7% last week (a total of 89,781 from 127,753 the previous day). Hospital admissions also fell in eight of the country’s nine provinces. “Although the Omicron variant is highly contagious, the number of hospitalizations was lower than in previous waves, and the increase in deaths was ‘marginal,'” the presidency said.
The use of a mask remains mandatory in public places and gatherings of up to 1,000 people are allowed indoors and 2,000 in the open.
