The ninth-century book known as the ‘Codex Sassoon’ is the link between the Dead Sea Scrolls and today’s Bible
The oldest and most complete Hebrew Bible ever discovered, a “vital touchstone of human history” dating back more than 1,100 years, is to be auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York.
The ninth-century book known as the “Codex Sassoon” is the link between the Dead Sea Scrolls and today’s Bible. An estimate of $30-50 million makes it the most valuable historical document or manuscript to appear at auction.
“The Hebrew Bible is the sacred, foundational text for peoples around the world,” said Sharon Mintz, head of Sotheby’s Judaica, adding. “In ‘Codex Sassoon’, a monumental transformation in the history of the Hebrew Bible is revealed, bringing to light the complete history of the Hebrew Bible that had never before been presented in book form.”
It is worth noting that the record for the most valuable historical text and manuscript sold at auction is held by the first printing of the US Constitution, which sold for $43 million in November 2021.
According to the Guardian, the Bible is being auctioned from the collection of Jacqui Safra in May in New York.
