Summoning its ambassador will not change the Dutch’s decision to bring those responsible for the downing of the plane to justice, the Dutch deputy prime minister said.
Russia announced on Friday that it had summoned the Dutch ambassador to Moscow in connection with what it described as the Dutch government’s “obsessive efforts” to assign responsibility for the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014. .
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry blamed the joint investigation team set up to find out who was responsible, saying it was “politicized”.
Prosecutors announced last week that they had found “serious evidence” that Mr Russian President Vladimir Putin approved Ukraine’s use of a BUK-type missile system that was used to shoot down the airliner over eastern Ukraine in 2014.
The summons of its ambassador will not change the Dutch’s decision to bring to justice those responsible for the downing of the plane, Dutch Deputy Prime Minister Sigrin Kaag said.
“We look forward to international justice and we intend to find the truth for the victims and their relatives” Kaag told reporters in The Hague.
“This is all part of the diplomatic game, but we know what we stand for. The ambassador will hear their message, convey it to us and that’s all.”
Flight MH17, which had departed from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down by a Russian BUK missile system on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 passengers and crew on board, including 196 Dutch citizens.
