Parliamentarians from twenty member countries have recently put pressure on Austria, urging it not to grant visas to members of the Russian delegation.
Members of the Ukrainian parliament will boycott the work of the parliamentary assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on Thursday and Friday, due to the participation of members of the Russian Parliament, a member of the Ukrainian national delegation clarified yesterday, Sunday.
“We will not participate in the official events of the parliamentary assembly — none of us,” Yevgenia Kravchuk, an MP from President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Servant of the People party, said on Ukrainian television.
Ms. Kravchuk clarified that she and other members of the Ukrainian parliament will travel to Vienna for the 22nd winter parliamentary session, but for one-on-one talks with Kiev partners.
The OSCE, founded in 1995, aims to guarantee the security of Europe. The Russian army’s invasion of Ukrainian territory on February 24, 2022 is the most serious crisis it has faced.
Parliamentarians from twenty member countries have recently put pressure on Austria, urging it not to grant visas to members of the Russian delegation.
Vienna countered that as it hosts the OSCE headquarters, it is obliged to host Russian parliamentarians.
Authorities in Britain and Poland, however, refused to grant visas to Russian delegates when they hosted those parliamentary sessions last year.
Helga Maria Schmidt, the German secretary general of the OSCE, generally opposes Russia’s exclusion from the institution, arguing that diplomatic channels should remain open.
