“She is one of my children now,” said her uncle – “I will make no distinction between her and my children”
With the the little girl is now with his uncle and aunt which was born under the rubble in Syria at the time of the deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Thousands of people had offered to adopt the newborn, who when found was still attached to her mother by her umbilical cord. However, the little girl will eventually grow up with her uncle and aunt after the little girl was first discharged from the maternity hospital and a DNA test was done that confirmed that they are her relatives.
According to the doctors, the little one is in good health after first staying in the incubator for a few days.
“He’s one of my kids now“, her uncle Khalil al-Sawadi told the Associated Press news agency. “I will not discriminate between her and my children.”
The little girl was initially known by the name Aya, which means “miracle” in Arabic, which the rescuers had given her. However, she will eventually be named after Afraa’s mother who failed and passed away after first bringing her to life. So did her father and her four siblings.
The video of the little girl’s rescue shortly after the earthquake went viral on social media.
“This girl means so much to us because there is no one left of her family except this baby,” Mr Sawadi told Reuters. “It will be a memory for me, for her aunt and for all our relatives in her mother’s and father’s village.”
Mr. Sawadi, who was present when the little girl was rescued, told The Associated Press that he was worried that someone might kidnap Afraa during her two weeks at the maternity hospital, as there were many offers for adoption. However, it was thought that the best place for the little girl to stay was with her relatives no matter how difficult the situation was as Mr Sawadi and his wife Hala’s house was also destroyed by the earthquake and they are staying with cousins now.
In fact, Hala also gave birth to a baby girl just three days after the deadly earthquake.
