French President Emmanuel Macron said today that the next few weeks will be difficult due to Covid-19, with the country today setting the absolute record for coronavirus cases with 232,200 new infections in the last 24 hours.
“The coming weeks will be difficult, we all know that,” Macron said in a televised address ahead of the new year.
The head of state of France pointed out that France is in a better position compared to a year ago, due to the number of citizens who have been vaccinated and reiterated his call for mass vaccinations, calling vaccines the “safe” solution for France to get out. from the pandemic, something that, as he stressed, he believes is possible in 2022.
In his speech, Macron did not mention the need for stricter health measures than have already been announced, adding that the government should avoid further restricting citizens’ individual freedoms.
“We will overcome the current challenge by following the same principles as the first day (of the pandemic),” he stressed.
No word on the possibility of running in the April presidential election
Meanwhile, the French president said he would continue to serve France “whatever my role”, after the April 2022 presidential election.
During his televised sermon, he gave no clear indication as to whether he would run for a second term in the presidency.
Macron’s associates have already, unofficially, begun preparations for his campaign.
