“Every attempt we made to get them to give us information was either rejected or ignored,” Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, said during a Security Council meeting on the issue on Tuesday.
Russian diplomacy has contradicted German assurances that Moscow has been briefed on the findings of an investigation into the September 2022 explosions that damaged parts of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which carried natural gas from Russian fields directly to the European market.
“Every attempt we made to get them to give us information was either rejected or ignored,” Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, said during a Security Council meeting on the issue on Tuesday.
Claims to the contrary are false, he insisted.
Germany, along with Sweden and Denmark, through whose waters the pipelines pass, noted in a letter to the SA that their joint investigation is ongoing and it is unclear when it will be completed.
In the letter, Berlin stressed that Moscow had been informed of the joint investigation by the authorities of the three states, which Mr Polianski denied.
The EU and NATO have spoken of sabotage and in some quarters it has been suggested that Moscow was responsible.
The Russian government characterizes as absurd the claim that it would destroy the pipelines, worth several billions, and has indicated that the USA was the country that had the most to gain from the sabotage of these energy infrastructures.
Recently, Russian politicians have been brandishing a report by the experienced American journalist Seymour Hersh, in which an unnamed source is cited. The report states that US Navy divers placed explosives in the pipelines as part of a covert operation. This information was denied by the White House and the State Department.
Moscow is expected to push for a UN Security Council vote on the issue in the coming days, a diplomatic source said.
A draft resolution prepared and circulated by Russia at the United Nations, a copy of which was obtained by the German Agency, states that the attack on the pipelines was carried out following “repeated threats” by US politicians.
