Starbucks, one of the biggest American brands, faced obstacles as it tried to expand into the Italian food and beverage market
The world’s largest coffee chain, Starbucks, has announced that it is launching a new line of drinks in Italy that will contain olive oil, according to the BBC.
CEO Howard Schultz said the “unexpected, velvety, buttery flavor of the olive oil… enhanced the coffee and lingers beautifully on the palate.”
Starbucks, one of the biggest American brands, faced obstacles as it tried to expand into the Italian food and beverage market.
Italy’s coffee scene is famous for its independent and often family-run cafes.
Starbucks currently has about 20 stores in the country.
“Now, are there going to be people who say olive oil in coffee? But the proof is in the cup,” Schultz says on the company’s website.
“In over 40 years, I can’t remember a time when I was more excited,” he added.
The company plans to bring its collection of hot and iced beverages to stores in Southern California this spring. The UK, the Middle East and Japan will follow.
The Oleato range, launched today in Italy, includes an iced espresso and an olive oil latte ‘steamed with oat milk’.
There will also be an iced coffee in which “a silky extract of Partanna extra virgin oil with a foam of sweet vanilla cream…slowly diffuses into the drink.”
