At least two dead and more than 50 trapped are currently the toll from the collapse of a coal mine in the Inner Mongolia region, in the northern part of China.
“At least 57 people are missing,” state-run CCTV said, adding that “more than 200 rescuers have arrived at the scene.”
Earlier, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that more than 50 people were trapped due to the mine collapse.
“The accident happened on Wednesday afternoon and according to an initial investigation, more than 50 people are trapped in the mine,” according to the New China agency.
“At 17:13 (local time, 11:13 Greek time) three people were pulled out of the mine, two of whom had no vital signs,” according to the same source.
Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered a search and rescue operation at the mine, according to state media.
Mine safety has improved in recent decades in China, as has media coverage of such incidents, many of which have been hushed up in the past.
