Almost two in ten (17%) said they had lost someone in the war and six in ten (58%) considered it “impossible” to restore friendly relations with Russians and Belarusians
The 95% of Ukrainians believes in the victory of their country in war with the Russiaaccording to a poll conducted in early February by the Ukrainian Rating Group institute, which shows that citizens’ resolve has not waned after a year of conflict.
Meanwhile, 97% said they trusted the military (up from 65% in 2019) and 90% trusted the president Volodymyr Zelensky – this percentage was just 36% in January 2022, i.e. one month before the invasion.
Almost two in ten (17%) said they had lost someone in the war and six in ten (58%) found it “impossible” to restore friendly relations with Russians and Belarusians, whose country is an ally of Moscow . For 22%, the restoration of relations could be done “in 20 to 30 years”, while 11% believe that it will happen sooner, in “10 to 15 years”.
Two-thirds of Ukrainians said their financial situation had worsened. More than a third (36%) lost their jobs.
The percentage of Ukrainians living apart from their relatives due to the war has dropped significantly, from 41% in March 2022 to 21% a year later.
The poll was conducted on a “representative sample” of 1,600 Ukrainians from various regions of the country, outside the occupied territories, Crimea and Donbass.
The poll also reveals Ukrainians’ pro-Western aspirations: almost 9 in 10 (87%) want their country to join the EU and NATO (86%). These percentages are constantly increasing in recent years. In February 2022, before the start of the war, 62% wanted to join NATO and 30% disagreed. In March 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea, a majority of Ukrainians opposed joining NATO (43% against versus 34% in favor), according to Rating.
In the poll, Ukrainians were also asked about a number of social issues. For example, the percentage of those who say they have “no doubt” about God’s existence fell from 60% to 55% by 2021, while the percentage of those who favor the death penalty fell from 52% to 42%. On the other hand, the percentage of those who say they have a “neutral or positive view of the LGBTI+ community” increased from 53% to 64% from 2021.
