Poll – Italy: The most popular politician is the “technocrat” Draghi – What is his next step?

The “technocrat” Mario Draghi has emerged as the most popular politician in Italy according to a poll conducted by the company Demos, on behalf of the newspaper La Repubblica,

The Italians consider the so-called “Super Mario” as the best politician their country has, both in terms of domestic and international politics. Even if, in fact, as everyone knows, he is a technocratic prime minister.

More specifically, 27% of the sample answered that the current head of the government of Rome, in terms of domestic policy, proved to be the most suitable and capable politician.

They are followed by former Prime Minister and current five-star leader Giuseppe Conte with 17%, Georgia Melloni, president of Italy’s far-right Brotherhood party, with 5% and Lega secretary Matteo Salvini with 5%. The same percentage of preferences was gathered by the President of the Republic, Sergio Matarella.

In terms of the international political scene, the Italians believe that in 2021 the most capable politician has always been Mario Draghi, with a percentage of 20%. In second place in the poll is former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, with a percentage of 12%. They are followed by Giuseppe Conte with 5%, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen with 3% and US President Joe Biden with the same percentage.

According to the Italian commentators, this new “first” of Draghi increases even more the interest in the big choice that he will probably be called to make in about a month. That is, whether he will remain in the country’s prime ministership until the 2023 parliamentary elections, or will accept the proposals made to him for a long time and will succeed Sergio Matarella as the new president of the republic.
