Berlin had announced on February 22 the expulsion of two Iranian diplomats
Iran has expelled two German diplomats stationed in Tehran in response to the February 22 expulsion of two Iranian diplomats from Berlin following the death sentence of a German-Iranian, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced today.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement “the expulsion of two German diplomats as undesirable persons, following the interventions (…) of the German government in the internal and judicial affairs” of Iran.
Berlin had announced on February 22 the expulsion of two Iranian diplomats, calling the conviction of dissident Jamshid Sharmad, 67, “absolutely unacceptable”.
The latter is accused of participating in an attack on mosques in Shiraz, southern Iran, which killed 14 people in April 2008.
According to the court, he also had contacts with “FBI and CIA officers” and “attempted to contact Israeli Mossad agents.”
Charmand’s supporters in Germany have rejected the accusations, calling on Berlin to “act immediately” to “save his life”.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will act decisively against any excessive demands” related to this condemnation, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said in a statement today.
At least 16 Western passport holders, including six French nationals, are being held in Iran. Most of them have dual citizenship, but Iran does not recognize dual citizenship status for its citizens.
Jamshid Sharmad’s death sentence was announced the day after new European Union sanctions were imposed to protest the crackdown on protests in Iran following the death in custody of a young Iranian Kurdish woman on September 16. , by Mahsa Amini.
