It comes as tensions between Washington and Beijing remain at a high, especially over Taiwan, which China considers a breakaway province destined to be reunited with the mainland, by force if it deems necessary.
The State Department said for its part that the arms sale announced by the Pentagon conforms to Washington’s traditional positions regarding Beijing and Taipei.
“US support for Taiwan and measures taken by that country to strengthen its self-defense capabilities contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region“, decided the American Foreign Ministry.
Taiwan’s government was quick to welcome the new arms sale, the first announced by the US this year and the ninth during Joe Biden’s presidency.
“In the face of China’s continued military expansion and provocative behavior, Taiwan will continue to actively increase its ability to defend itself“, said a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taipei.
