Hungary will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem next month in a move of support from Prime Minister Viktor Orban to his counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, the newspaper reported today. Times of Israel.

If this news is confirmed, Hungary will become the first EU member state to open an embassy in Jerusalem, which Israel considers its capital but is not recognized as such by most countries as its status is disputed under international law.

Hungary’s foreign ministry did not confirm the Israeli newspaper’s report and added that it would inform the embassy of any change.

“We moved years ago the commercial section of our embassy in Israel to Jerusalem,” Mate Pazzolai, a ministry spokesman, told Reuters when asked about the leaked information.

The US, under Donald Trump, moved its embassy to Jerusalem in 2018, but very few countries have done the same.

In 1980, the Israeli parliament adopted legislation declaring Jerusalem “whole and united” as the country’s capital.

The UN considers East Jerusalem occupied, while the city’s status remains controversial until it is resolved through negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, who want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state.
