This particular sub-variant has gradually established its presence since the end of last year and has now prevailed, since it is estimated that it represents 89.2% of the new infections reported in the last week in the US.
Omicron’s highly contagious XBB.1.5 subvariant currently accounts for nearly 90% of new Covid-19 cases reported in the US, according to data released Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This particular sub-variant has gradually established its presence since the end of last year and has now prevailed, since it is estimated that it represents 89.2% of the new infections reported in the last week in the US. A week earlier this percentage was 85.4% and the previous week 79.7%.
The second most prevalent strain of the coronavirus, BQ.1.1 accounts for just 6.7%.
The CDC notes that the XBB.1.5 subvariant last November accounted for less than 1% of cases nationwide and has since spread rapidly.
Although the strain is likely the most contagious of those seen to date, American scientists emphasize that it does not appear to cause serious illness.
