Eight people were shot dead Monday night in a mountainous region of central Honduras, apparently over a land dispute, police said.

“The victims are six men, a woman and a minor child who were traveling in a vehicle (…) when they were attacked by unknown people with weapons,” Honduran police spokesman Edgardo Baraona told AFP. “They died instantly,” he added.

The attack took place in the El Portillo de la Mora region, about 70 kilometers north of the capital Tegucigalpa.

“We hypothesize that (the killings) are due to a dispute over land” between families, Comayagua police spokesman Norman Velasquez told local media.

Honduras continues to be among the world’s worst violent crime nations, although its homicide rate fell to 35.79 per 100,000 in 2022, a sixteen-year low.
