Saudi Arabia: Air defense shot down five drones

by

Saudi Arabia’s air defenses have intercepted and destroyed five drones fired against the kingdom by Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen, according to the country’s official news agency (SPA).

The drones came from Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, it is noted.

Earlier, the Saudi Ministry of Defense announced that a “hostile air target” had been located and intercepted in the city of Taif, in the province of Makkah.

Shiite rebels control most of northern Yemen, as well as the capital Sanaa. Saudi Arabia has been involved in the war in Yemen since 2015, leading a military coalition formed by Sunni Muslim countries to support government forces against the Houthis, which are believed to be backed by Iran.

Clashes between the coalition and the rebels have escalated in recent weeks, with the Saudi Air Force stepping up its attacks in Houthi-controlled areas. For their part, Shiite insurgents have stepped up rocket and drone strikes against Saudi Arabia.
