The American writer Paul Osterfamous for his novels set in New York and featuring protagonists who are often marginal or disoriented, is suffering from cancer, his wife announced Saturday.
The writer, 76, is being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, his wife Siri Hustvet, also a writer, said via Instagram.
“My husband was diagnosed with cancer in December, he has been sick for the past few months,” she wrote.
“I now live in a place I’ve come to call Cancerland,” he continued. “Many cross its borders, either because they are sick themselves, or because they love someone, a father, child, spouse or friend who has, or had, cancer,” he added.
Paul Auster is the author of over thirty books, which have been translated into over forty languages.
He became famous in 1982, with his book “The Invention of Solitude”, an autobiographical novel in which he dissects the personality of his father, “an invisible man”.
The author achieved international fame in 1987 with the “New York Trilogy”, a noir inspired by detective fiction.
Ms. Hustvet did not specify the type of cancer her husband has or the prognosis. “Living with someone who has cancer and is bombarded by chemotherapy and immunotherapy is an adventure between closeness and separation,” she wrote.
“It’s not always easy to walk that tightrope…”, Mrs. Hustvet judged.
