The EU Special Envoy for the Kosovo issue Miroslav Lajčak began his contacts in Belgrade with the Serbian political leadership with the aim of implementing the European plan for the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo.

This afternoon, Mr. Lajcak met with the President of the Republic, Aleksandar Vucic, with whom – as announced – he will have another meeting in the evening, while the talks will continue tomorrow. During his two-day stay in Belgrade, Miroslav Lajčak will also meet with leaders of opposition parties. After today’s first meeting, Aleksandar Vucic wrote on Instagram that “the conversation with Lajcak was difficult but essential”. In the announcement of the presidency of the Republic, it is stated that “Alexander Vucic set as a condition for the implementation of the European project the establishment of the Union of Serbian Municipalities in Kosovo as well as the protection and security of the Serbian population”.

Last Friday, March 10, EU Special Envoy Miroslav Lajčak visited Pristina where he met with the Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo stated today that Miroslav Lajčak presented him with various versions for the establishment of the Union of Serbian Municipalities which are being considered by the relevant state bodies. It is noted that Kurti refuses to implement the agreement on Serbian municipalities reached in 2013 claiming that it is against the Constitution.

The tour of Miroslav Lajčak in Pristina and Belgrade aims to prepare the next meeting of the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell with the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic and the Prime Minister of Kosovo Albin Kurti, which will take place on March 18 in the town of Ahrida in North Macedonia. At this meeting, the road map for the implementation of the European plan for the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, which was officially presented by the EU on February 27 and accepted by both sides, will be determined.
