A missile of unknown type is said to have been launched by North Korea

North Korea has launched an unidentified missile eastward into the sea, marking the first test of such a weapon system by Pyongyang in the new year, according to South Korea’s General Staff.

The Japanese authorities considered this missile to be ballistic.

The South Korean staff simply stated that the rocket was aimed at the sea, without giving further details.

In 2021, North Korea announced that it had successfully tested a new type of ballistic missile, launched from a submarine, a new long-range cruise missile, a train-launched weapon, and a supersonic missile.

The weapons test comes as North Korea does not respond to a US proposal to start diplomatic contacts between the two countries in order to resume negotiations.

During a landmark meeting of Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his willingness to step up his country’s military capabilities, which have been severely sanctioned by the international community.

Pyongyang-Washington talks are at a standstill following the failure in 2019 of a meeting between Kim Jong Un and then-US President Donald Trump in Hanoi.

Since Joe Biden took office almost a year ago, the United States has repeatedly stated that it is ready to begin contacts anywhere and without preconditions with North Korea. Pyongyang, however, has so far rejected the offer.
