Wyoming’s governor signed the abortion pill ban law into law on Friday, which now goes into effect in this US state.

Republican Mark Gordon signed the controversial bill as a federal judge in Texas is considering banning the pill mifepristone across the US state following an appeal by anti-abortion activists earlier this month.

Legal battles over the right to abortion have intensified in the United States since the US Supreme Court’s decision last year overturned a landmark 1973 ruling that protected it at the federal level. Since then 12 of the 50 US states have outlawed abortion altogether, while several others have adopted very strict restrictions.

Clinics offering abortion services report that if mifepristone is banned, they will resort to misoprostol preparations for the medical termination of pregnancy. However, the exclusive use of misoprostol preparations is not considered equally effective.
