A cargo ship unloaded a large number of cylinders of uranium from Russia this morning in the port of Dunkirk – “Continued nuclear trade with Russia in wartime is scandalous”
Greenpeace today denounced the arrival of a “large” shipment of enriched uranium from Russia to France, calling “the continued nuclear trade with Russia in time of war scandalous”
A cargo ship unloaded this morning in the port of Dunkirk a large number of cylinders of uranium coming from Russia, as an AFP journalist found out.
The news, according to the non-governmental organization, confirms France’s dependence on the Russian nuclear industry, a sector that has not been subject to international sanctions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“This is further proof that the French nuclear industry continues to do business with Rosatom,” the Russian nuclear giant, said Pauline Bouagé, campaigner for nuclear and energy transition.
The 7th Russian uranium shipment to arrive in France since the start of the war in Ukraine
“This morning in Dunkirk the Russian cargo ship Baltiyskiy 202 from St. Petersburg unloaded 25 cylindrical containers containing enriched uranium for the French group Orano (formerly Areva),” Greenpeace complains in a statement issued a day before the vote in French National Assembly on the bill to strengthen the nuclear energy industry.
According to the organization, the cylinders were then loaded onto trucks bound for the Pierlatt factory in Drome.
This is, according to Greenpeace, the 7th shipment of uranium reaching France from Russia since the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
In a report dated March 11, the organization denounced France’s dependence on the Russian nuclear industry, a sector untouched by international sanctions, unlike the hydrocarbons sector.
The non-governmental organization has revealed that France has procured from Russia “a third of the enriched uranium needed by French nuclear power plants for one year”, corresponding to a tripling of the amount, for 2022.
The French government rejected the complaints, assuring that “our country is in no way dependent on Russia for the operation of the nuclear power park” and “has managed to diversify its sources of supply”.
“If the government wants to be consistent with its support to the Ukrainian population, it should break all contracts with Rosatom,” said Pauline Boaget.
