Benjamin Netanyahu’s nationalist-religious coalition survives motion of censure of the opposition in the Israeli Parliament (Knesset), which was filed in protest of the controversial justice reform plan.
The motion of censure was voted against by 59 MPs, while 53 voted in favor.
Israel’s prime minister has postponed a planned announcement on the suspension of judicial reform amid disagreements in the ruling coalition, Israeli television reported.
Earlier today, the Israeli television network Channel 12 had reported that Netanyahu is going to announce the suspension of the reform, which has caused strong reactions and demonstrations in Israel, but also the concern of the country’s allies.
The largest union Israel’s Histadrut earlier announced an immediate general strike demanding the withdrawal of the justice reform plan.
“I call for a general strike (…) right after the press conference, the State of Israel stops,” said Arnon Bar David, head of Israel’s largest union. “Our mission is to stop the legislative process and we will.”
This announcement was followed by her announcement Medical Association of Israel which also declares a general strike that will affect hospitals and public medical services.
Already, takeoffs from Ben Gurion Airport have been suspended in protest against the government’s judicial reform, an airport representative announced.
