Centrist former prime minister Yair Lapid said the opposition needed to make sure Netanyahu was not “bluffing” and had a “bad experience” with him in the past.
The opposition parties were cautious Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to delay reforming the judicial system, noting however that they will work towards an agreement as long as the government is sincere.
THE centrist former prime minister Yair Lapid said the opposition must make sure Netanyahu is not “bluffing” and that in the past he has “bad experience” with him.
“On the other hand, if the government starts a real and honest dialogue, we can come out of this crisis – stronger and more united – and we can turn this into a defining moment for our ability to live together.” he said in his announcement.
The US welcomed Netanyahu’s announcement of a “delay” on the controversial reform, which “gives more time to find a compromise,” a White House spokeswoman said. “We continue to call on Israeli political officials to find a compromise solution as soon as possible,” said Karin Jean-Pierre.
From London, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley praised the Israeli government’s decision, stressing the importance of maintaining a system of “checks and balances.” Netanyahu recently met with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in London, where he was greeted by hundreds of protesters holding Israeli flags and chanting “Shame” in Hebrew.
