The Lithuanian government plans to buy military hardware worth 753 million euros this year, the defense ministry announced on Tuesday.

Vilnius is investing in anti-aircraft defense systems, mobile tactical electronic warfare systems, remote-controlled drones and individual weapons such as pistols and machine guns, according to the ministry’s press release.

The Lithuanian government also plans to proceed with the acquisition of equipment jointly with its Baltic neighbors — Estonia, Latvia — in order to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank, according to the same source.

Lithuania borders Russia’s Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad and Moscow’s ally Belarus. The country’s government characterizes the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022 as a direct threat to Lithuanian national security.

It has announced a massive increase in its military spending: it will reach 1.8 billion euros in 2023, in other words 2.52% of GDP.
