“Five” arrest warrants issued in connection with the investigation into the tragedy, which unfolded overnight Monday to Tuesday, have already been executed, human rights prosecutor Sara Irene Hererias Gera said during a press conference.
The five suspects have been “placed at the disposal of a judge”, he added.
In total, six arrest warrants were issued against three employees of the National Institute of Migration (INM), two private guards and an immigrant suspected of setting the fire, the prosecutor explained.
He did not clarify who the arrested suspects are.
The Mexican authorities also made public, for the first time, the nationalities of the victims, who were all men: they were nationals of Guatemala (18), El Salvador (7), Venezuela (7), Honduras (6) and Colombia ( 1).
Injured are five El Salvador nationals, 10 Guatemalans, eight Hondurans and five Venezuelans, Public Security Minister Rosa Isela RodrÃguez said. One of them was discharged from the hospital where he had been treated.
The government of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is working to decide what help “will be offered to the families” of the victims, Ms. Rodriguez said.
Taking into account shocking video from the closed-circuit surveillance of the immigration detention center, the authorities announced yesterday Wednesday that an investigation into the “serial murders” had begun. They talked about eight suspects.
