More than a third of the 7 million immigrants living in France, 36%, have obtained French citizenship, the same source added
Immigrants made up one tenth of France’s population in 2021, the country’s national statistics agency (INSEE) announced Thursday.
More than a third of the 7 million immigrants living in France, 36 percent, have obtained French citizenship, the same source added.
Almost half of the immigrants (47.5%) come from Africa, while 33.1% from Europe and 13.6% from Asia.
Their main countries of origin are Algeria (12.7%), Morocco (12%), Portugal (8.6%), Tunisia (4.5%), Italy (4.1%), Turkey (3.6%) and Spain (3.5%).
On average, for every four people who immigrate to France, one French person immigrates.
The French government is currently trying to pass a new immigration law that will make it easier to deport illegal aliens, especially those who commit crimes, while providing legal documents to illegal immigrants who work in sectors where there is a labor shortage.
The bill has been criticized both by the right, which wants to reduce the number of immigrants and does not consider the measures restrictive enough, and by the left, which considers it too strict.
