Argentina continues to record a dizzying rise in cases of the new coronavirus: a record for the third consecutive day and broke the barrier of one hundred thousand in 24 hours, with 109,608 to be announced yesterday Thursday by the Ministry of Health; this is one of the most spectacular increases in infections in Latin America in recent weeks.
The previous record (over 95,000 cases of SARS-CoV-2) was announced the day before yesterday Wednesday and broke in turn that of Tuesday (80,000), which was almost double the cases of Monday.
Compared to the numbers announced until mid-December, ie about 5,000 infections per day, the cases have increased twentyfold.
In the last seven days, the average number of cases has increased by 155% compared to the previous one, according to estimates by the French Agency, based on official data.
As in other countries affected by the Omicron variant, the frightening increase in the number of cases translates into a lot of pressure on the test centers in Argentina, where several people expressed the feeling of delayed awareness of the threat on Thursday.
“I think action needs to be taken, it seems to me that everything is free, that people are not paying attention,” said Sol Castanio, a 21-year-old student, waiting in line at an examination center in Buenos Aires. “Now we’re starting to see more masks, more people watching – but two weeks ago, it was like we didn’t have a pandemic.”
The occupancy rate of beds in intensive care units (ICU) increased slightly, but remained at a manageable level, at 37.5%, yesterday Thursday (compared to 35.9% on Tuesday), according to figures from the Ministry of Health.
Forty deaths were reported due to complications of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, compared to 52 on Wednesday and 49 on Tuesday; at the end of May.
The health pass for citizens over the age of 13 came into force on January 1, in view of the summer holidays in the southern hemisphere (January-February), when citizens will flock to the beaches. A full vaccination certificate will be required to participate in mass gatherings, including those held outdoors, as well as in cultural, sporting, religious, and other indoor activities.
73% and some 45 million people in Argentina have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, almost 15% have received a booster dose.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, more than 6 million people have been infected with the virus and at least 117,386 deaths have been recorded in the country.
