Australia is banning the installation and use of the Chinese company ByteDance’s TikTok app and platform on government devices, following a series of similar decisions in Western states on security grounds, Australian Justice Minister Mark Dreyfus announced today.

The decision was based on advice from Australian intelligence services and will be implemented “as soon as possible”, Mr Dreyfus said.

Western governments say Beijing could use the company’s data to track users or advance its political agenda, despite denials by the company that created the platform.

According to Mr. Dreyfus, exceptions will be provided only on a case-by-case basis and with the application of security measures.

With this decision, all members of the network known as Five Eyes (Australia, Canada, USA, Britain, New Zealand) have now banned the app from being installed on state-owned devices. France, Belgium and the European Commission have also announced identical measures.
