One person was killed and 30 injured, several “seriously,” when a passenger train derailed in the early hours of today after colliding with heavy construction equipment on the tracks, Dutch emergency services said, Reuters reported.

Emergency services have been rushed to the area where the collision took placenear the village of Voorschouten, between The Hague and Leiden.

Some of the injured were treated at the scene, while others were taken to hospital, according to emergency services.

The train was running a night route from Leiden to The Hague. The first carriage of the train derailed and is overturned in a field, according to the Dutch news agency ANP.

A second carriage has also overturned, while a fire broke out in the last carriage, which has now been extinguished, according to the latest information.

Earlier, the agency spoke of a collision between a passenger and freight train.

Netherlands Railways (NS) said on Twitter that other routes connecting Leiden and The Hague were canceled or suspended due to the accident.
