CEO Moderna: A fourth installment against Covid may be needed in the fall of 2022

A “window” for a fourth installment in the fall of 2022 was left open by Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel, as he said the effectiveness of booster doses against Covid-19 is likely to decrease over time.

In accordance with CNBC, Bancel said people taking the boost in the fall are likely to have enough protection to survive the winter, when new infections rise as people congregate indoors to avoid the cold.

However, he noted that their effectiveness will decrease over the months, as happened with the first two doses.

“I still believe we will need a booster dose from the fall of 2022 onwards,” said the CEO of Moderna, adding that people who are older or have an underlying condition may need a booster dose of the vaccine for years to come.

“We have said we believe this virus will not go away,” he said, adding that “we have to live with it.”

Moderna published preliminary data last month showing that the approved booster dose of 50 micrograms increased antibodies that block Omicron infection by 37 times and 100 micrograms by 83 times.
