A letter written by an American soldier to his mother two months after the end of World War II in December 1945 finally reached its destination 76 years later.
At the time, 22, US Army Sergeant John Gonsalves wrote from Germany to his mother in Woburn, Massachusetts.
According to the Boston 25 News, the mail was unopened for all these years, lost in a distribution center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“Dear Mom, I got another letter from you today and I’m glad to hear that everything is fine. As for me, I’m fine and doing fine. But as far as food goes, it’s pretty bad most of the time.” of Gonsalves’ letter released by the broadcaster.
The young sergeant also signed the letter. “Love and kisses, your son Johnny. See you soon, I hope.”
The veteran died in 2015, and his mother is also now deceased. But the mail found the address of Gonsalves’ wife, whom he met in 1950, five years after writing the letter.
“Imagine that, 76 years old!” Angelina Gonsalves, 89, said in an interview with Boston 25 News. “I just couldn’t believe it. It has his handwriting and everything, it was so amazing.”
In the interview, she says that a postal worker approached her asking if her late husband had served in the US Army. “Then he said, ‘I think I have a letter for you.’ And I said, really?”
Along with the original correspondence, the US Postal Service sent a note on behalf of the company. “We are not sure where this letter has been for the past seven decades, but it arrived at our facility approximately six weeks ago. Due to its age and significance to your family history, delivering this letter was of the utmost importance to us. “
Angelina was married for over six decades to John, with whom she had five children. A widow for six years, she said she is still getting used to spending the holidays without her husband. But this time was different. “It’s like he’s come back to me, you know?”
