Guinea’s navy seized 1.5 tonnes of cocaine on Sunday after it was found on board a Sierra Leone-flagged ship, the African country’s armed forces said on Wednesday.

Sixty-two bags with 25 kg of cocaine each and another with 22 kg were found in the hold of the ship which was searched by the PN during a patrol.

The crew of the boat consisted of four Sierra Leoneans, three Ghanaians and three Guineans, the armed forces’ communications and public relations directorate said.

The Ministry of National Defense handed over the 1,572 kilograms of cocaine and the 10 crew members of the ship to the prosecutor of the Court of First Instance of Calum, in Conakry, according to the same source, who clarified that an investigation is being carried out into the case.

West and central Africa, for years considered simply a transit area, have now become areas of increasing drug consumption, according to the latest report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) which released in June 2022.

The UNODC stated in this report that between 2019 and 2022, at least 57 tonnes of cocaine were seized in or en route to West Africa, mainly in Cape Verde (16.6 tonnes), Senegal (4.7 tonnes) and Benin (3.9).
