Robert F. Kennedy Jr., 69, a member of the Kennedy political dynasty and a figurehead of the anti-vaccination movement in the US, has filed the required documents to run for the 2024 presidential election.

He will seek the Democratic nomination, documents he filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) confirm.

President Joe Biden, 80, has yet to formally announce his re-election bid, but is expected to.

Mr. Kennedy is the nephew of former President John Fitzgerald Kennedy and the son of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who were both assassinated while in office.

An environmental lawyer, he has been spreading conspiracy theories, particularly about vaccines, for two decades and has become a fixture of the anti-vaccine movement amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

He is officially the second contender for the anointing of the Democrats. In early March, it was announced that 70-year-old writer Marianne Williamson would run for it.

On the other side, in addition to Republican former President Donald Trump, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Esa Hutchinson and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy have already officially announced they are running for the GOP nomination. However, it is expected that many more will manifest themselves.
