Palestinian militants fired rockets into southern Israel for a second day today, the Israeli military said, after a police raid on the Al-Aqsa mosque compound sparked cross-border fire and fears of further escalation.

There were no reports of casualties from the rocket attack launched early this morning from the blockaded Gaza Strip, which is controlled by the Islamist movement Hamas.

Yesterday, Wednesday, the Israeli police raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, a powder keg of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The incident, which occurred during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the eve of the Jewish Passover, was widely condemned in the Arab world and caused concern in the White House.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry announced that the UN Security Council would hold a closed-door session today to discuss the raid, which Israeli authorities said was an attempt to prevent violence to remove groups entrenched inside the mosque with guns, stones and firecrackers.

At least 12 Palestinians were injured and images of police beating worshipers inside Islam’s third holiest site circulated on social media.

Immediately afterwards militants in Gaza fired rockets at Israel, which responded with airstrikes.
