Four people were killed and another is still missing after a tourist helicopter crashed near Ha Long Bay in Vietnam on Wednesday, official media said today.

Contact with the helicopter, carrying the pilot and four Vietnamese tourists, was lost five minutes after it took off to fly over the UNESCO World Heritage site.

“The pilot’s body was found last night around 11,” state media VnExpress reported.

A rescue team found part of the US-made Bell 505 light helicopter this morning with a body inside, the media said, adding that two more bodies were found near Ha Long Bay, without giving further details.

“The search and rescue team is still looking for the fifth body and the rest of the helicopter,” VnExpress clarified.

Vietnam’s civil aviation sector has a good level of safety, although accidents involving military aircraft are frequent.

The Northern Vietnam Helicopter Company, which owns the helicopter, said it was halting all tourist tours in the country, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

The company has been ferrying tourists over the famous rock formations of Ha Long Bay since 2019. No accidents have been recorded since its launch in a country with a growing number of tourists.
