Canada’s Trade Minister Mary Enzie condemned a hate crime at a mosque on Saturday, noting that the incident, which an Islamic association said appeared to involve an attempt to tear up a copy of the Koran, had no place in Canadian society.

The Islamic Society of Markham (ISM) said in a statement that a man entered the Markham mosque, located 30 kilometers north of Toronto, on Thursday and apparently tore up a Koran, shouted at worshipers and then tried to he drags them away with his vehicle.

“I was very upset to hear about the violent hate crimes and racist behavior at the Islamic Society of Markham,” Angie said in a tweet.

The minister does not go into details about the incident, but notes: “This violence and Islamophobia has no place in our communities.”

This incident occurs during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, when worshipers flock to mosques. Thousands of people visit the mosque in Markham, according to the association.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims expressed its “deep sadness” over the incident in a tweet.
