Many workers were eating their lunch when the building collapsed, trapping 27 of them in the rubble. All those trapped have now been retrieved.
The building was located in Wooling District, 100 km east of Chongqing.
A video broadcast by the Chinese media shows a cloud of dust over the wreckage and people trying to get the trapped out. In other images, firefighters examine the remaining walls and cranes lift the concrete slabs.
In another video also aired by Xinhua, rescuers in military uniforms run to the scene with shovels in their hands.
What happened was “scary” a woman said, explaining that the explosion “broke all the windows” of her house.
