The President of the United States, Joe Biden criticized today once again the arrest of the American journalist of the Wall Street Journal Evan Gerskovich in Russia, as a suspect of “espionage”, characterizing it “totally illegal”.

“We have made it clear that what is happening is completely illegal”Biden told reporters as he departed for the North Ireland.

The US president said he had tried unsuccessfully on Monday to contact the jailed journalist’s family and would try again during his flight to Belfast, where he will mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday peace accord, which brought an end to years of bloodshed in Northern Ireland.

The WSJ reporter was arrested on March 29 in Yekaterinburg by men from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). He will remain in custody until May 29 and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of espionage.

The US Department of State officially described yesterday Monday the detention of Evan Gerskovich as “illegal”, thus assigning the file of the case to the special envoy for hostage cases Roster Carstens. This development “changes the dynamic”, President Biden argued.
