International outcry over gruesome killings – Kremlin disputes images, calls for video to be authenticated
The international outcry has been caused by two videos circulating on the internet in which a) one shows the beheading of a Ukrainian soldier – a prisoner of war – by a Russian soldier and b) the second a series of decapitated corpses of Ukrainian soldiers, which in fact in they were then stripped by the Russian, according to Ukrainian media.
The UN Human Rights Mission in Ukraine said it was “shocked” by the beheading video while also referring to the second video which shows “mutilated corpses, apparently Ukrainian prisoners of war”.
The UN called for “these incidents to be the subject of a genuine investigation and their perpetrators to be held accountable.”
At the same time, the EU will demand that “all perpetrators and accomplices of war crimes” in Ukraine be held accountable, as Nabila Masraly, representative of the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, emphasized today.
“The EU has no information on the authenticity of the video,” but “if it is confirmed, it will be yet another stark reminder of the inhumane nature of Russian aggression,” she added.
For its part, the Kremlin today requested that the authenticity of the video be checked.
“These are, of course, horrific images,” said Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian presidency.
“In the world of ‘fakes’ we live in, we need to make sure this video is authentic,” he added.
