US officials are trying to find out who leaked the classified information
Ukraine’s defense minister said Wednesday that classified Pentagon documents that appear to have been leaked contain a “mixture of true and false information” about his country’s military, but downplayed their negative impact.
“There is a lot of information in them that does not correspond to reality,” said Oleksii Reznikov during a press conference in Madrid with his Spanish counterpart.
“Information that corresponds to reality have lost their importance. Therefore it is a mixture of truth and falsehood.”
Reznikov also said he believed the leaks were a deliberate attempt to show disagreements between Kiev’s allies.
“The winner of this job is of course Russia and its allies or supporters,” Reznikov said.
“The goal of this work is to lower the level of trust between our partners, especially the United States and the other countries, and for me that is absolutely clear and clean.”
US officials are scrambling to find who leaked the classified information as Ukrainian forces appear to be preparing a counter-offensive to retake Russian-held territory.
Reznikov dismissed as “untrue” hints in the leaked Pentagon Papers that NATO special forces are operating inside Ukraine.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said today that the “treasure trove” of documents must be false and a deliberate attempt to disorient Moscow. The Kremlin has said it does not know “like everyone else” how authentic these documents are.
Some security experts and US officials say they suspect the leaker could be American, but they are not ruling out pro-Russian actors.
