A 19-year-old man has been charged with four counts of manslaughter after a boat carrying migrants to Britain sank last December in the English Channel.
As announced by the British police, Ibrahima Bach will be brought before a court in Folkestone, in the south of England, tomorrow Thursday.
Four migrants, including a teenager, died in the wreck trying to cross the English Channel. Another 39 people were rescued.
Police authorities are still trying to identify the victims and locate their relatives.
The investigation is also continuing to clarify the exact circumstances of the wreck.
Ibrahima Bach was arrested a few days later and is accused of “willingly facilitating the attempted arrival in the UK of persons whom he knew or had reason to believe were asylum seekers”.
In 2022 more than 45,000 migrants crossed the English Channel to reach England, a record number. Since the beginning of the year at least 4,800 have attempted this dangerous crossing.
The Conservative British government has promised to stop the barges, but so far without success. To convince the immigrants he plans to ban them from seeking asylum in the country. He also wants to send them to Rwanda, a plan that is currently on hold pending court rulings on its legality.
