British fashion designer Mary Quade, the creator of the miniskirt, has died aged 93, her family has announced.

Mary Quade, a central figure of the Swinging Sixties, was one of the best-known and highly innovative fashion designers of the 20th century.

Mary Quade established mini dresses and mini skirts, in simple lines and vibrant colors. But women also owe her shorts, hot-pants, plastic raincoats, waterproof mascara, make-up cases.

In November 1966 Quad was awarded an OBE by the Queen for her services to British exports and industry

Born in London in 1930, she opened her first boutique, Bazaar, in Chelsea in 1955, when the neighborhood was booming. The clothing and accessories store quickly became the meeting place of the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn.

“My clothes stuck to teen fashion, to pop, to espresso bars, to jazz clubs,” she wrote in her first autobiography, Quant by Quant, published in 1965.
