The German foreign minister Analena Burbok called Beijing today to request “from the attacking Russia to stop the war” in Ukraine, judging that “no other country has more influence on Russia than China.”

“I must say frankly that I am puzzled why the Chinese position does not so far include a request to the aggressor Russia to stop the war”Burbok noted at a joint press conference with her Chinese counterpart Qin Gang in Beijing.

The German foreign minister, who is visiting China, also warned against it today “catastrophic scenario” which would recommend for “the whole world” a military escalation in the Taiwan Strait.

“A military escalation in the Taiwan Strait, through which 50% of world trade passes every day, would be a catastrophic scenario for the entire world”noted and warned China against a use of military force against Taiwan.

“Conflicts must be resolved peacefully”Burbock added after talks with her Chinese counterpart Qin Gang in Beijing and noted that Germany is watching the tensions in the Taiwan Strait with great concern.

“A unilateral, violent change of the status quo would be something unacceptable for us Europeans,” he stressed.

The German foreign minister also complained “the restriction of human rights in China”.

“I explained to my counterpart during the bilateral talks we had that we are concerned to see that the scope of civil society in China continues to shrink and that human rights are curtailed,” he noted in remarks he made to reporters in Beijing, referring mainly to the state of of the Uighur community in Xinjiang.
