“Russia uses certain dependencies in the energy sector as a means of exerting political pressure,” Mr Habeck told the German News Agency.
The imposition of sanctions, in order to end the dependence of European countries on Russian uranium, the Minister of Economy suggested again Robert Hambeckstressing that Moscow can no longer be considered a reliable partner – especially in the energy sector.
“Russia uses certain dependencies in the energy sector as a means of exerting political pressure”, said Mr. Habeck to the German News Agency (dpa) and asked the European Union to impose sanctions against the Russian nuclear industry.
“The federal government has spoken to the European Commission in favor of including the civilian nuclear sector in the sanctions,” noted the German minister, with an eye on the uranium supplied by Russia to many European countries for nuclear fuel rods, but also on the storage of radioactive waste that offers on their behalf. “The EU must become completely independent of Russia in matters of energy. We have come a long way, but the nuclear sector is still open and it cannot be justified that there is still something that gets preferential treatment.”he added.
In Europe, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Great Britain, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Bulgaria and Slovakia, among others, use Russian uranium for their nuclear plants, making the issue controversial for the European Union. Germany’s last three nuclear plants are being shut down tonight, but there are still 12 EU member states that still use nuclear power to generate electricity.
