At least two people have died and five others are missing in Peru after landslides triggered by heavy rains, the government of the Latin American country announced on Saturday.

The landslides occurred on the night of Thursday to Friday in a rural community in the district of Atavijos Bajo, in the province of Ural, in the district of Lima (north).

“We have two dead and five missing due to landslides and collapses,” said Justice Minister Jose Tejo, who went to the scene.

Among the victims is a 65-year-old woman.

At least 27 homes were destroyed, according to the national emergency operations center.

The rainy season, which began in January and typically lasts until the end of April in Peru, has killed 84 people this year, with around 45,000 affected across the country, according to emergency services.

Unusual, torrential rains have caused overflowing rivers and devastating landslides in the Peruvian Andes.
