A 20-year-old woman has died after being shot in her car in Hebron, New York. According to a New York Post report citing the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred when the girl, named Kaylin Gillis, and three other people in their attempt to find a friend’s house they turned into the wrong entrance.

When the girl realized that she made a mistake, she tried to leave the scene. Then 65-year-old Kevin Monahan, owner of the house, allegedly shot twice from his yard towards the vehicle, fatally wounding the unfortunate girl. Gillis’ death appears to have been instantaneous. Authorities arrested him and charged him with murder.

“This is a very sad case of some young adults who were looking at a friend’s house and ended up at this man’s house, who decided to come out with a firearm and shoot,” Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy told local media.

The area where the shooting took place is rural, with lots of dirt roads where it’s “easy to get lost,” the sheriff said.

“There was clearly no threat by anyone in the vehicle,” Murphy said. “There was no reason for Mr Monaghan to feel threatened.”
