The 84-year-old faces life in prison after being charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action
The elderly man accused of shooting African-American teenager Ralph Yarl twice is now in the hands of US authorities after surrendering. Andrew Lester, 84, turned himself in to the Clay County Detention Center in Kansas City, Missouri, on Tuesday afternoon.
He faces up to life in prison after being charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action.
Ralph Earl, 16, was shot twice when Lester showed up at the front door of his home, which is just a block away from the property where his younger twin brothers were waiting to pick them up.
Lester was initially arrested on April 14, hours after the shootings, and claimed to police that “scared to death” when the Jarl stood at his front door. But he was later released on the advice of the Clay County District Attorney’s Office, which charged him six days later.
The teenager’s parents had asked him to pick up his 13-year-old twin brothers from a home in Kansas City. Ralph got the address wrong and went to the wrong house. The case has caused strong reactions in the US.
