US accuses Swiss bank of obstructing investigation into unknown accounts of high-ranking Nazis
Another dark shadow looms over her Credit Suisse, a month after it was bought by UBS to avoid collapse and in the wake of accusations that it helped Russian tycoons flout Western sanctions and Americans evade taxes. Now the Americans are accusing the Swiss bank of obstructing an investigation into previously unknown accounts held by high-ranking Nazis at the bank.
The allegations relate to an internal investigation that began after the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights organization, informed the bank in 2020 that it had new information about Nazi-linked accounts. While Credit Suisse agreed to cooperate, it is now accused of obstruction, reportedly firing the independent ombudsman who oversaw it, according to a statement from the US Senate Appropriations Committee.
“When it comes to investigating Nazi-related matters, justice demands that we exhaust every avenue of inquiry,” the senator said. Chuck Grassley. “Credit Suisse has so far failed to live up to this,” he added.
